Basic theme of a girl walking through the world, encountering and naming the animals - mixing something like the Just so stories with old fairy tale cliches and a bit of origin story. Oh, and 'origin of phrases'
Problem: If each chapter is the length of that one, I need 50+ chapters. Ouch.
Still, there's plenty of significantly different animals out there. Introduce a few as running characters and hopefully everything explodes.
So far:
Rabbit. Run rabbit, not jump. So cocky in their speed that they invent 'showing tail' - if you can see it, you can't catch it. Maybe the tail is so short because of cockiness. Probably continues on to whatever caught the rabbit.
I want to use 'fickle promise' fox.
Story of little red hen.
Names as a way to seal and lock down what an animal is. "Swift and sharp toothed, sharp of eye and nose - hunter in pack, I so name you; and nothing more."
I'm not actually saying who the girl is. Name her as the animals name her, for what she lacks in comparison. I suck at coming up with names.
Cat who walks alone rocked.
Tortoise. Sure, bunny is faster. Tortoise doesn't get eaten though.
Let's have some legendary ones - bestiary for Pard and Salamander are great. Look up some more.
